Rethinking Dog Water Fountain Capacity: Know How Much Water It Actually Holds
When we reviewed customer feedback, we found that some owners were disappointed by how much water their fountain actually held. That made something clear: putting a capacity number on a product is not enough. We need to explain what that number means in everyday use.
For large-dog and multi-pet households, capacity helps you plan refills. You should know how much water a fountain holds when it is assembled—not have to work out the meaning of the label after it arrives. Making that clear is our responsibility.
Why a bare basin’s capacity is different
Take the D2341. Its lower basin holds 11L when filled to the brim with the top removed. That is not the assembled fountain’s capacity, and it is not a recommended filling method.
With the top fitted, the lower reservoir holds 9L. The upper drinking bowl holds 1L. Together, they provide a total assembled water capacity of 10L.
D2341: 9L lower reservoir + 1L drinking bowl = 10L total.
The 1L bowl is already included in that 10L. It is not an extra liter to add on top.
Three models, one consistent explanation

When comparing fountains, start with the assembled total and check how the reservoir and bowl contribute to it. A brimful bare-basin figure is not the normal-use capacity or a filling limit. Follow the water-level marks and filling instructions for your model.
For US shoppers, 10L is approximately 2.6 US gallons, and 9L is approximately 2.4 US gallons. These gallon figures are rounded conversions of the totals above.
About 1L remains available when the power goes out
At a normal operating water level, the D2341’s upper bowl can retain approximately 1L for pets to drink after power is lost. For a 40lb adult dog (about 18.1kg), that is equivalent to roughly 20 hours of typical daily water needs.
This is an estimate. Hot weather or more activity can increase water needs, so check the bowl and replenish it as needed.
Calculation: the American Kennel Club gives a general adult-dog guideline of about 1 US fluid ounce per pound per day—approximately 65mL/kg/day. For a 40lb dog, that is about 1.18L daily. 1L ÷ 1.18L × 24 is about 20 hours. This is an equivalent-volume estimate, not a tested or guaranteed runtime. Read the AKC guidance.
More capacity still means checking water daily
Refill frequency varies with the number of pets, their drinking habits, spills, and routine water changes. A capacity estimate can help you choose a fountain, but it does not mean you can leave it unchecked for days.
Check the water level and water condition every day, refill as needed, and clean the reservoir, bowl, filter area, and pump according to the care instructions.
